Palmwoods Piccabeen Picnic
~ a celebration of our community, our town & our place ~
What do Palmwoods and a small town in NSW have in common? Here it is known as the Piccabeen Palm, there it is called the Bangalow Palm but is known all over the world as Archontophoenix cunninghamiana. Did you also know that it is one of only four palms indigenous to this district?
Palmwoods takes its name from the forests of piccabeens and other palms that used to line the waterways of hinterland valleys. The term Piccabeen comes from pikki, an indigenous water carrier made from the palm fronds.
In the centre of Palmwoods town there is a small remnant of the massive palm forests that would have graced the local waterways. Unfortunately this remnant grove comes under the proposed railway footprint! Can we rebirth it from the phoenix’ ashes of forests long gone?
To this end, Palmwoods Heritage Community Branch is sponsoring the planting of a new Piccabeen Grove in Federation Park, away from roads and train lines.
Piccabeen Palms don’t like to be alone. They grow in groves. They need the protection of many of their kind around them. They are not a solo species. They are a team player! Just like us!
Palmwoods will celebrate our local palm on Palm Sunday, with a family parade from the town hall finishing with a picnic in the verdant Federation Park.
Leaving from the Memorial Hall in the centre of town, the Piccabeen theme parade is an opportunity to walk with community to Federation Park. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed family, individual and business group. The picnic in the park will also feature the crowning of a Piccabeen Prince and Princess.
But wait there’s more! Local artists, Linley and Kari, are working together on an artistic feature for the Piccabeen Picnic, combining ceramic sculpture, dance and film projections. Imagine projection depicting Palm Groves, sculpture responding to Piccabeen, and dancers responding to sculpture in a work, which interweaves the different mediums. This work will feature at dusk at the picnic.
All in all, Palm Sunday is the day to be in Palm-Woods.
This TreeLine event is an initiative of local artists in association with Palmwoods Progress Association, with funds from Heritage Community Branch and Sunshine Coast Council’s RADF program. TreeLine is an initiative of the Sunshine Coast Council. This region-wide event celebrates our trees to inspire our community to take action for the environment.
