TreeLine, a Sunshine Coast Council Greenart event, was launched at the Bunya Dreaming at Baroon Pocket Dam Saturday 30th January.

Organisers Beverly and Michael Hand annually invite participants to celebrate the significance of the Bunya tree by regenerating an age-old Aboriginal tradition of gathering together at the time of the Bunya harvest.  The Bunya Dreaming has fully embraced TreeLine and organisers actively facilitate partnership building between environment and heritage organisations.

TreeLine artists, Walbira and Scott Murray, installed Sorry Tree, a response to the 2008’s National Apology to Australia’s indigenous people. The Apology acknowledged the shameful past and also looked forward, heralding a renewed and united effort to close the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.  The artists felt that the National Apology wasn’t the end, but rather the beginning of new dialogue and action that has to occur in Australia to ensure authentic, deep and complete healing.   Participants at the Bunya Dreaming were encouraged to participate by contributing their thoughts on the National Apology, which were then installed on Sorry Tree. Other onsite sculptures included Aboriginal totems of the rainbow serpent, wedge tailed eagle and king parrot created by the community.  The TreeLine Team would like to express our gratitude for the warm welcome from the Hand and Bond families; the opportunity to participate in a festival celebrating a tree as significant as the Bunya; and the chance to form partnerships with others.

From January to July 2010 TreeLine will continue to celebrate trees and their stories with Sunshine Coast Communities and take action for the environment, heritage and community through art.
