Aesculus
Event date: 29 May 2009 - 4 Jul 2010
Aesculus is the Latin name for the California Buckeye tree. We are fortunate to live within walking distance of some beautiful open private land contiguous to Wildcat Regional Park, and there is a public access trail through the private land to the park, which is a favorite walk for us. Just five or ten minutes up the hill, right below the path, is this fabulous buckeye tree. Over a year ago, my husband Daniel Schmidt and I began taking photos of this gorgeous tree throughout the year, with the idea of choosing our favorite for each month and creating a calendar. I wrote the Aesculus poem to coordinate with the images. When the calendar is complete, our goal is to make it accessible on the Canyon Park Friends of Open Space website (http://www.saveelsobrantehills.org/) as a fundraiser for this excellent local environmental non-profit, which has been striving for decades to "protect our hills and valleys from unwise development".
