Caring for Our Country Coastcare Project: Maree Edmiston-Prior - Beachbiosis
Event date: 1 Mar 2010 - 30 May 2010
Maree will work with school groups to create a low relief sculpture and stencils in/on the sand adjacent to either pandanus or ‘coastal hardening’ sites on the beach. The pandanus, due to its iconic beachside status and popularity in coastal landscaped gardens is a much loved tree, however the pandanus population is under threat from a microscopic leafhopper.
The pandanus is also the departure point for coastal environment issues such as beach driving impacts and climate change.
The designs of the stencils will be developed from the study of microscopic benthic organisms usually only known and seen by scientists; while dune stabilizing vegetation will be the source of inspiration for sand sculpture.
Although sand sculptures are not new on the beach, they are usually popularist designs such as dragons and castles. The theme of “TreeLine” will inform a different expression of sand sculpture; and the use of black/brown coloured sands in the stencil work will be a departure from commercial sand sculptures.
