Caring for Our Country Coastcare Project: Margaret Worthington, Suzanne Aspland and the Currimundi Catchment Care Group
Event date: 1 Mar 2010 - 30 May 2010
The Currimundi Lake (Caloundra) area is well known for its community and school commitment to the protection of the ecological values of the coastal lake and surrounding ecosystems.
On March 27th from 1-5pm, Sunshine Coast Council Environmental Educator Suzanne Aspland and volunteers from Currimundi Catchment Care coordinated a great, balmy, relaxing, creative afternoon out with Lead Artist Margaret Worthington. Cr Keryn Jones opened the event in her lovely style. Margaret offered a community art workshop to gather designs on wildlife and issues of the Currimundi Catchment to be used in permanent etched stainless steel interpretation panels alongside the lake; Suzanne conducted a walk and talk along the lake identifying species; and Joan, a Currimundi Catchment Care volunteer, discussed issues and protection measures. About 65 people attended the event, many focused on their drawings for the entire afternoon, while others participated in pavement art on wildlife issues and kite painting ready for the World Environment Day Art on the Wind project planned for June 5th by the same group.
In addition Margaret and Suzanne worked with teacher Cathy Money and students from Pacific Lutheran School to create an artwork based on their personal response to the ecological values and issues of the lake.
A permanent interpretative art installation, based on personal/community/school group designs created during the community event, will then be created on the shoreline of Currimundi Lake in an appropriate location.
Currimundi Catchment Community Art on the Wind Project
Consider using the wonderful Birdwings and Swings EcoArt Education Kit to study your school grounds or local bushland remnant. You are invited to create an ecological artwork on a kite which can be flown on the sandbanks at the mouth of Currimundi Lake.
Why kites? As identified during our field activities manmade materials such as balloons and plastics are carried by wind or stormwater into the Lake and from there into the ocean. This marine debris is responsible for the death of many hundreds of aquatic wildlife and birds every year. This form of pollution also impacts on the scenic quality of our environment. In using kites for the artworks we offer an ecologically sustainable, colourful alternative to release of balloons for celebratory and memorial purposes.
To celebrate World Environment Day 2010 we will join together with all the creative owners of kites made during the Art in the Park event and the “Space out, Space up” schools project to fly our kites on the sandbanks at the entrance to Lake Currimundi.
Date: June 5th, 3pm
Location: Currimundi Lake entrance sandbanks. Please download the PDF Education Kit Birdwings and Swings for activities and to see how you can get involved in this project.
This project was a partnership between the Currimundi Catchment Care Group, Caring for Our Country Coastcare Grant Program and the Sunshine Coast Council.
