The Embrace Project
Event date: 1 May 2010 - 3 Jul 2010
A Sunshine Coast conservation group has called on locals to help it plant some 500 trees across the Coast before World Environment Day, May 28, 2010. Once our goal is reached, we intend to continue regular tree planting and community education activities on the Sunshine Coast on a regular basis.
Australia is losing 250 square km each year to soil erosion and other environmental factors. Thats 5 sq km per week.
“Our tree planting activities serve a dual purpose,” says organiser Samantha Cooper. “People can help us to combat climate change, soil erosion and other environmental factors and The Embrace Project receives some much needed promotion for future projects.”
Launched in 2008, The Embrace Project has been running environmental education programs for schools and community groups across the coast for 2 years.
It now aims to continue raising awareness of environmental issues while establishing a community farm space which will provide a platform for a host of grass roots activities. Construction, re-vegetation, permaculture, personal development and team building programs are planned, aiming at strengthening Coast communities by building strong relationships.
The concept has received support from psychologists as an important mechanism for encouraging strong relationships: Psychologist Ian Johnson says that support networks are an important factor in people’s ability to cope with the challenges of modern life. Projects such as those implemented by The Embrace Project aim to provide opportunities that can help people develop a sense of community, belonging and value.
The Embrace Project will be facilitating tree planting activities throughout April and May to raise funds for The Embrace Projects ongoing work in the community.
“Our vision is to advocate for connection with people rather than technology, so our aim is to provide a space free from the distractions of everyday life,” Ms Cooper said. “It’s about getting back to our roots and encouraging face-to-face interaction in a world where people are becoming increasingly isolated because of technology and ever-hectic lives.”
The Embrace Project also intends to increase its web presence on the internet through developing its own website. One of our main priorities is to network with a vast range of community minded individuals to make The Embrace Project a reality. Anyone wishing to assist The Embrace Project by volunteering their time or help us by fundraising and awareness raising can do so by contacting Sam Cooper.
