Kari and Linley Boyle
Event date: 28 Mar 2010 - 4 Jul 2010
Performance: Caloundra Regional Gallery, May 28, 6pm at the TreeLine Opening
Piccabeen Pride is a TreeLine lead artist project. It is a multilayered artistic response to the Piccabeen Palms of this region.
The work combines high fired ceramic sculpture, choreography and photo/film projections. Projection depicts local Palm Groves, sculpture responds to Piccabeen, and dancers respond to the stacking sculpture in a work which interweaves the different mediums. Featuring at dusk in a natural environment, local artists, Linley Boyle and Kari wished to celebrate the palm in a situation where the palms grow naturally, and are currently being enhanced by the community.
Kari’s ceramic pieces are textured with the imprint of seed stems then finished with an ash glaze; ash collected from Kari’s fireplace. “There’s old Piccabeen fronds in that ash”. The palm trunks are created not as a lone piece, but by interlocking several pieces together. Piccabeen Palms don’t like to be alone, they thrive in family groups, in groves, in a close community. They need the protection of many of their kind around them. They are a team player, a group dancer.
Linley’s choreography and the Bodysong Dancers work
together, weaving the story of the Piccabeen Palm. They depict the finger-like roots, the tall tiered trunks stacked up and covered in lichens, the interplay of overlapping fronds, and the hanging clusters of red seeds. The dance celebrates the cycle of renewal through growth and decay. Togetherwork, community, layers, belonging.
