Monterey Cypress - Sandra Wolfson
Event date: 2 Dec 2009 - 4 Jul 2010
The Monterey Cypress are the beautiful wind sculpted trees that line the Monterey Bay Sanctuary. The Sanctuary protects a diversity of habitats, including wave-swept beaches, dramatic rocky shorelines, lush kelp forests, and the unique Monterey submarine canyon, which meanders over 60 miles of seafloor and descends two miles into the oceanic abyss. You can witness its incredible marine life from the shore -- whales, sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, pelicans, and a variety of marine life abound! I love the Cypress Trees that frame this amazing shoreline. In the wild, the species is confined to two small populations, near Monterey and Carmel. These two small populations represent what was once a very large forest on the west coast. The surviving trees from this forest are as old as 2000 years. The natural habitat is noted for its cool, humid summers, almost constantly bathed by sea fog.
Ecofeminism
I'm inspired by Anne Brigman who integrates the female figure with the natural landscape.
Pictorial photographer Anne Brigman sought to achieve art with her camera at a time when the relatively new medium of photography was viewed as a largely documentary form. She manipulated negatives with paint and etching tools to get the effects she wanted, going so far as to add or remove features of the landscape—including trees and the moon. The inspiration for much of her work came from the California landscape, where she took photographs on extended camping trips in the mountains. As one of the first photographers to take the female nude in the natural landscape as a subject, Brigman’s work ties the female body to the natural world in a way that anticipates late twentieth-century ecofeminism and the societal and cultural connections it draws between women and the environment.
Right now I'm combining drawing, painting, photography into a digital art form to represent beauty, the female form and the natural environment where I live.
