TreeLine @ Sunshine Coast Heritage Festival
Sunday April 18th from 9am-4pm (World Heritage Day).
Friends of Bankfoot House, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council will host the Sunshine Coast Heritage Festival at the State Heritage-listed Bankfoot House. There are a wide range of activities occurring on the day including guided tours of Bankfoot House which is the first settler home in the Glass House Mountains. There will also be museum displays, vintage cars, antique and art estimates, Cobb n Co memorabilla and lots more, please see the attached flyer for more information.
Treeline will be having a special presence at this day, showcasing the stories of attachment to the Bankfoot House Fig Tree. Whilst out Timber-getting one day at Peachester, one of the Grigor boys (the original owners of Bankfoot House) found a fig seedling, dug it up and brought it down to Bankfoot House on his horse. He planted it in the backyard around the early 1900s. According to the Council arborist, this fig is now dying. In conjunction with the Friends of Bankfoot House, Treeline is undertaking research on how to save this fig. Council are growing cuttings from the fig and a plan of action is being implemented in order to give this fig the best chance of survival.
Treeline has engaged the assistance of a local writer, Anthony Greenwood and Traditional Custodian Beverly Hand to assist in the sharing of the Bankfoot Tree story. A photographic display will be exhibited around the substantial fig on the day, along with a short film on the oral history of the fig. The stories of the settler's and their descendant's attachment to the fig will be told by Beverly Hand. This promises to be a unique celebration through short film, writing, photography and the uniqueness of having a Traditional Custodian tell the story of a settler's connection to a tree.
Descendants from the Grigor's, the first settlers in the Glass House Mountains, will be present on the day and will participate in a special planting ceremony of the fig tree cuttings.
Come along and share in our rich local history!
