ANZAC Day 25th April 2010 Discover Eumundi- Heritage & Visitor Centre

‘Trees of Tribute’ will celebrate the Memorial Trees of Eumundi on Anzac Day with a ‘field’ of red poppies installed at the main wreath laying site. It is planned to have a trail of messages and drawings from local school children running along the top of the wooden railings leading up to and surrounding the site. The poppy emblem was chosen because wreaths of red Flanders poppies are traditionally placed at memorials on ANZAC Day.  These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their red colour an appropriate symbol for the bloodshed of trench warfare.

The Memorial Trees in Eumundi were planted during and after the First World War. Eighty-seven men from Eumundi and the surrounding district served in the First World War and the trees were planted to honour the twenty men who did not return.

Eumundi is one of the few towns in Queensland which does not display a monumental type memorial to the First World War. Memorial Drives of trees are relatively uncommon in Queensland, particularly those in which each tree is representative of a specific fallen serviceman.
